The 13th edition of our festival was completed with great success and enthusiastic engagement not only by the audience but also by its participants and lovely guests.

In a year when there seemed to be a return to a pro-covid normality, the international circumstances were not the most promising ones as there was a widespread social discomfort and an ongoing war while on a national level, the athenian movie theatres were at stake. However, given the opportunity of the number “13”, we aimed to change the narrative – at least on a symbolic level – and embrace its connotations.

More than 2.500 viewers enjoyed our screenings which at times we received with enthusiasm, in others instances provoked fruitful conversations but above all they revealed the multiple ways in which the human condition is transformed.

In collaboration with Onassis Culture and Onassis Air, we had the honour to welcome Trinh T. Minh-ha in Athens with the occasion of her first and her most recent film. It was an endless joy to hear the emblematic filmmaker speak, along with Elpida Karampa and Eva Stefani.

Ethnofest in collaboration liminal organised an accessible screening of five educational films, with audio description and SDH subtitling for people with visual and hearing impairment, at the Greek Film Archive Foundation, while the accessible films remain available to watch via our website.

In collaboration with MedINA, we produced educational films that record practices of the agronutritional tradition in Lemnos. Three of these films were screened in this year’s programme.

Historians Tasoula Vervenioti and Yiorgos Andritsos were in conversation with anthropologist Konstantinos Kalantzis around the topics of memory, narration, oral history & visual anthropology on the occasion of the screening of the film “The Impossible Narration”, while within the closure procedures of the European partnership programme: Encounters, through art, ethnography, and pedagogy, we organised an exhibition and a presentation of works created by the participants in the educational and research activities of the partner institutions.

As always, student films, both greek and international, were a big part of our programme with the students being able to watch their first filming attempts on the big screen.

Online screenings were also available so as for a selection of our programme to reach a larger part of the audience within the wider greek region.

Beautiful films, engaged audiences and exquisite guests surrounded this year’s edition with warmth and with the hope of returning next year, with more resilience and joy.

Agronutritional Tradition in Lemnos (85΄)

The agronutritional tradition in Lemnos as cultural heritage through three educational films produced by Ethnofest in collaboration with MedINA. The agricultural production and the sheep and goat herding in an island where the local products are interconnected and interwoven with the lives and the identities of its communities.

The following films will be screened:

Bread in Lemnos. Culture and Heritage (Greece, 2021, 38’)

Cheese in Lemnos. Culture and Heritage (Greece, 2021, 32’)

Basketry & Traditional Cheese Baskets(Greece, 2022, 16’)

Camera, history and narration

An open discussion about the ethnographic film “The impossible narration: Memory and photography of the Kalavryta Slaughter” (Dir. Konstantinos Kalantzis).

How and what does a society remember? How can one grasp mnemonic processes and the representation of the past by ethnographically using cameras on the fieldsite? How does memory become a narration and what does this process entail emotionally and politically? What sort of ethical issues emerge when one conducts research among survivors of traumatic historical events? What is the position of the 1940s in Greek contemporary social imagination? How are contemporary political instances experienced through the lens of the past?

Historians Tasoula Vervenioti and Yiorgos Andritsos will be in conversation with anthropologist Konstantinos Kalantzis around the themes of memory, narration, oral history & visual anthropology on the occasion of the screening of the film “The Impossible Narration”.
