Merqana

The experience of merqana binds together tens of millions of people in the Horn of Africa and beyond. Similar to that of the legendary Lotus, merqana is a profound state of high, deriving from the chewing of a leafy amphetamine called qat. Set in the ancient, walled city of Harar and its surroundings, the film takes you to an epic journey through the social life of one of the world’s most popular drugs, treading upon green carpets of leaves, and dancing at the rhythm of centuries-old mystic rituals.

Coming from different backgrounds like social sciences journalism and cinema, their collaboration started in 2011, while shooting “”Bulaq””, a short documentary film focusing on the struggle against demolitions and evictions of a central Cairo neighbourhood, during the first months of the ‘Egyptian Spring’. They mainly focus on underreported stories and social issues such as urban speculation in the Roman suburbs as in “”Comprensorio Casilino”” (2012), or citizenship rights in Italy as in “”Italeñas”” (2013).
