Following the previous, and first with the format, edition the Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices returned in July of 2023 at Färø Creative Learning space in the center of Athens and hosted students from a wide range of countries around the world. Indicatively, the students originated from France, US, South Korea, Italy, Belgium, UK, Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Greece and Cyprus.

We had the pleasure of working with distinguished academics and professionals from Greece (K. Aivaliotis, K. Kalantzis, P. Karathanasis, D. Katapoti, S. Kechagia, C. Liapi, S. Michalakas, C. Theocharis,) as well as to welcome our long time collaborator Mattijs Van de Port, Professor in Visual Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam as well as Philip Cartelli, moving-image artist and researcher to give lectures on essay film storytelling and experiments on ethnographic filmmaking respectively and the great Anna Grimshaw to share her thoughts on the contemporary tendencies on observational cinema. Finally, the experienced educator and researcher Konstantina Bousboura joined us as the students’ supervisor.

On the last day of the programme, the student groups presented their films to a small audience of peers. This year’s productions looked into micro-stories from the city of Athens, including the Pireus port, Faliro seaside, the social life of a waterelon, of a bookstore, memory in marked bodies, the lives of two chefs from the Kurdish region of Turkey, Balconies, a boy’s passion and joy for dancing and heritage.
