The people portrayed in this film are called Hamar. They are isolated by some distant choice that now limits their movement and defines their condition. Part of their tradition is the acknowledgement of male supremacy. Hamar men are masters and their women are slaves. The film is an attempt to disclose not only the activities of the Hamar, but also the effect on mood and behavior, of a life governed by sexual inequality.
Robert Gardner
Robert Gardner was the director of the Film Study Center at Harvard University from 1957 to 1997. He is one of the most internationally renowned filmmakers and authors whose works have entered the permanent canon of non-fiction filmmaking. Some of his most prominent films are The Hunters (1957), Dead Birds (1963), Rivers of Sand (1974), and Forest of Bliss (1985).
