just a thing

Sporadically, on the Kenyan coast near the Somali border, unknown objects appear in the sky, at night or at dusk, they blink, glow, change colour, follow linear paths, sink into the sea. To get to the bottom of this phenomenon, Marc Einsiedel interviews the inhabitants of the Kenyan island of Kiwayu who sketch their memories in a notebook. These mysterious apparitions can be a way to accept the inexplicable – Just A Thing.

Marc Einsiedel

In his artistic work, he examines, analyzes, and engages with various aspects of public space and also focuses on fringe phenomena in nature through a documentary process. By adding, distorting, and recycling, he highlights forgotten grievances, documents the absurd and the trivial, or explores media unfamiliar to him. Found objects from public space are introduced into new contexts to offer fresh perspectives. He focuses on noticeable features, whether natural or societal, that appear in isolation and explores the interactions between infrastructure and architecture, as well as cultural and capitalist interests or needs. At the same time, he sheds light on formal structures and aesthetic aspects. Starting from investigative, documentary research phases, he develops both installation-based, material-precise, as well as performative works in film and photographs. These are presented as interventions in public spaces but also in conceptual exhibitions.
