Ethnofest, in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA), invites applications for the 2026 Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices, an intensive, practice-based programme dedicated to ethnographic, research-driven, and socially engaged audiovisual practices.

Taking place in Athens, the summer school offers participants the opportunity to work with the city as a living field, engaging with locally grounded practices, domestic contexts and everyday realities, while situating their work within broader international dialogues in visual anthropology and multimodal ethnography.

Still from our Athens walk in 2024 © Christina-Thalia Pappa

About the Summer School

Visual ethnographic research and multimodal practices have become essential tools for exploring contemporary social life and for expanding how situated knowledge can be produced, shared and experienced. The Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices foregrounds practice as research, bringing together theory, fieldwork and creative experimentation.

The programme is designed for those interested in exploring how ethnographic thinking can take shape through moving image, sound, writing and hybrid forms. Working in small groups, participants will collaboratively design and develop their own small-scale research projects, engaging closely with fieldwork, creative inquiry and collective decision-making. The summer school emphasizes process, hands-on learning, situated research and critical engagement over the production of a polished or industry-ready film.

The 16th Ethnofest – Athens International Ethnographic Film Festival has been successfully completed, receiving a warm response from the public, with more than 2,000 viewers attending screenings at the Astor Cinema until December 1, and online until December 7.

This year’s edition marked the first time that the section “Initiations: Student Films in Greece” assumed a competitive format. The Jury, consisting of Panos Gkenas, Mel Kalfantis, and Fili Olsevski, awarded a Special Mention to The Café Will Remain Closed by Magda Alexandri and Anna Chrysanthakopoulou, while the Best Film Award was given to Taratsa by Dimitra Chrysoula.
The filmmakers received their awards in an atmosphere of emotion, mutual support, and pride. As a tangible form of support for emerging cinematic voices, the award was accompanied by a €500 cash prize. Throughout the festival, international and Greek student films filled the Astor cinema, creating a vibrant community of dialogue, exchange, and interaction beyond the confines of academia.

One of the central meeting points and defining features of this year’s Ethnofest was the tribute “Geographies of the Gaze: Off-Plan Greece (1950–2000)”, presented in collaboration with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. The tribute opened a window onto rare and hard-to-access films deeply connected to the Greek countryside and to a sense of Greekness “off the grid.” Originally presented at the 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, the tribute found its ideal context at the 16th Ethnofest, introducing Athenian audiences to these works. The curators Eleni Androustsopoulou, Manolis Kranakis, and Yannis Palavos welcomed the viewers and spoke about the process of shaping the tribute, starting from Kastoria and Takis Kanellopoulos’ “Macedonian Trilogy,” as well as the challenges and importance of the filmmakers and their work. Within the framework of the tribute, we were honored to host filmmakers Dimitris and Kostas Koutsiabassakos, Manos Efstratiadis, and Christos Voupouras. The tribute concluded the festival on Monday, December 1, with a free and fully accessible screening at the Greek Film Archive.

Another particularly significant event was the screening of the documentary Unmaking Of, addressing art in the midst of genocide, accompanied by an intervention from the Filmmakers for Palestine network. Among the guest filmmakers was Philip Cartelli, who presented Ashes of Time for the first time as a work in progress, as part of the section Narrating the Fieldwork – a platform where audiovisual projects in development receive framing, support, and professional feedback. Additionally, directors Isabelle Ingold and Vivianne Perelmuter returned to Ethnofest for the third time with their new documentary New Beginnings.

Reshaping Ethnofest

The festival in the form we have known until now has completed its course.
It was a living and meaningful event, and, as demonstrated by the strong participation of both filmmakers and audiences, deeply connected to what has always defined Ethnofest: a meeting place for documentaries that require time, care, and dialogue.

After 16 years of creative festival-making, this year’s edition marks the completion of an important cycle. On the opening night, we shared a decision that has been maturing for some time: the festival, in its current form, reaches its conclusion.

This decision does not stem from a sense of withdrawal. On the contrary, it arises from a deep awareness of what we have accomplished and from the need to protect and evolve our core mission. The festival, along with the International Summer School and our educational and developmental activities, constitutes a pioneering and unique proposition within both the Greek and international documentary landscape – one we do not wish to see stagnate through repetition.

Observing shifts in the funding landscape as well as in the broader cultural ecosystem of Athens, we recognize a growing saturation of cultural and film events drawing from the same funding sources and addressing similar audiences. Especially during the final quarter of the year, Athens is filled with festivals. This is not a commentary or comparison, but a sincere assessment of the complex reality in which we operate, taking into account other interlocutors in this ecosystem such as funding, media, film distribution, and more.

Within this context, it is necessary to take a step back and allow space to explore new, fresher, and more sustainable forms of cultural intervention, better suited to highlighting our distinct content and objectives.

Our founding purpose remains non-negotiable: to create spaces and time for documentaries, for new, daring, and pioneering voices, and to bridge the academic and cinematic fields. So does our conviction that Ethnofest should be more than a festival, something we have already achieved. Ethnofest remains a platform for dialogue, education, exchange, and meaningful connection with the communities and stories that deserve to be heard.

From the coming year onward, we will be developing new forms of presence and engagement in the city of Athens – forms that will allow us to connect more deeply with residents, creators, and active citizens, and to engage creatively and dynamically with the contemporary cultural landscape.

Very soon, we will announce our first new activity beyond the Summer School: an initiative dedicated to supporting and showcasing student films produced across film and social science departments worldwide, with a continued focus on ethnographic approaches and socially engaged documentary filmmaking.

Ethnofest doesn’t say goodbye; it evolves.
We move forward with the same belief in the power of documentary, the necessity of collective spaces for viewing and reflection, and the certainty that stories that matter always find a way to be told.

Stay connected for what comes next.

The 16th Ethnofest – Athens International Ethnographic Film Festival was held with the support of the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center – Creative Greece (EKKOMED) and the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.
The post 16th ETHNOFEST | In a New Framework first appeared on Ethnofest.

As part of its collaboration with Ethnofest, the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology of the Department of Music Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens selects two films to be screened online and organizes an open online discussion.

What does the camera “see” when it “observes” dancing bodies? This discussion examines the interplay between the cinematic gaze and the ethnographic study of dance practices,
exploring how the camera can capture, interpret, and convey experiences of the body, community, and identity, with movement as the focal point. Centered on the films Kefi: The Story of FDF, the Greek Orthodox Folk Dance Festival (2020) and An Element of Hope (2025), screened in the EthnoFest online program, directors Patti Testerman, Natalia Koutsougera, and
Giorgos Danopoulos engage in dialogue with the team from the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology (NKUA), sharing insights from their long-term work on the film representation of diverse dance forms, cultural groups, and performative contexts. Members of the research project #DanceMuse from the Laboratory of Language, Folklore, and Culture (University of Ioannina) also take part in the conversation.

TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AT MORE.COM

THIS IS THE PROGRAM OF THE 16th ETHNOFEST!

The Ethnofest – Athens Ethnographic Film Festival returns for its 16th edition, both in cinemas across Athens and online throughout Greece, presenting documentaries from all corners of the world. Human experience—across time, space, and culture—remains the festival’s core. Staying true to its vision, Ethnofest approaches cinema as a space of empathy and dialogue, where the act of looking becomes a tool for understanding both others and ourselves.

TRIBUTE: “Geography of the Gaze: Off-Plan Greece (1950–2000)”
This year’s edition, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, hosts the tribute “Geography of the Gaze: Off-Plan Greece (1950–2000)”. This cinematic journey through the Greek countryside, presented through rare documentaries by seminal filmmakers, sheds light on collective memory and cultural identity, highlighting cinema as a living archive of our social and intellectual heritage.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS: BALLET, by FREDERICK WISEMAN
Thirty years after its original release, the festival honors and presents—for the first time in Greece—Frederick Wiseman’s landmark documentary Ballet. Focusing on the American Ballet Theatre, Wiseman follows rehearsals, classes, artistic meetings, and performances, illuminating the unseen and intensely demanding world behind the perfection of the stage. Through his signature long, unedited scenes, he highlights physicality, discipline, and the constant negotiation between authority and creativity—all elements defining a major artistic institution. The first part centers on choreographers’ working methods, while the second follows the company on a European tour, including stops in Athens and Copenhagen. A masterful portrait of the American Ballet Theatre, it remains a defining work of observational cinema.

SECTION: SIGHTS FOR SORE EYES
This expanded and renewed section merges the former Panorama and Experimentation in Ethnography programs, embracing works that challenge our certainties and refresh the cinematic gaze on the world through hybrid, experimental, and deeply human-centered narratives. From the favelas of Rio in Circo (Lamia Chraibi) to architectural memory and displacement in On Human Tenderness (Minou Norouzi); from the traces of a missing scientist in From Here, I Seem to Belong (Emilia Auhagen-Kuoppamäki, Leon Emonds-Pool) to a subtle observation of women’s labor in Women Artisans (Gavriela Gerolemou), the program forms a mosaic of different worlds. The section opens our gaze to gold hunting and myth in Under the Moriche Palms (Chris Gude), to a veteran’s journey of self-discovery in New Beginnings (Isabelle Ingold, Vivianne Perelmuter), and to reflections on art amid genocide in Un-Filming (Bilal Alkhatib). Memories of Cyprus emerge in both Screen Recording 2020–11–20 at 1.59.44 PM (Argyro Nikolaou) and A Breath on the Pavement of Strangers (Cindy Chehab), while family loss becomes an invocation to listen in Listen to the Voices (Maxime Jean-Baptiste). A section of films-as-worldviews, urging us to look again—and more attentively—at what we often overlook.

ETHNOFEST x BIENNALE
The presentation of Stes Pétres (Taşlara) by Sevina Floridou and the Fisherwomxn collective—representing Cyprus at the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale—bridges ethnography, art, and traditional technique, revealing the Cypriot landscape as both language and living archive of memory.

STUDENT SECTIONS: INITIATIONS
This year, the festival upgrades “Initiations: Greek Student Films” into a National Competition Section, highlighting new voices and innovative works emerging from Greece. “Initiations: International Student Films” includes films created within educational programs and international summer schools, offering insight into how young creators worldwide approach field research through collective and creative methods. Together, these two sections embody the heart of a new generation of filmmakers: works conceived within universities, collectives, and summer schools, where early cinematic gestures meet experimentation, observation, and personal testimony. Small but powerful stories that foreshadow tomorrow’s documentary. By connecting academic research with student production—and lived experience with films centered on daily practices, personal stories, and local communities—the section underscores the learning of cinematic and ethnographic language as a process of exploration and experimentation.

INITIATIONS: GREEK STUDENT FILMS
Escape to the Rock (Angelina Reka) follows two friends on their climbing excursions and their growing relationship with the natural environment. Kallithea, My Love (Antonis Gallios, Raphael Klaridopoulos, Giorgos Kritikós) focuses on a man’s love for his team and his neighborhood. In The Terrace (Dimitra Chryssoula), a women’s boxing group reunites after COVID-19, recalling their training and experiences. At the Lake (Efi Anagnostidou) uncovers the secrets of longevity through conversations with locals. The Café Will Remain Closed (Magda Alexandri, Anna Chrysanthakopoulou) observes the daily life of an elderly café owner. In Pissed Off on Themistokleous 13 (Dimitra Paraskevou, Marianna Nikolaidi), the everyday concerns of Gen Z unfold in a bustling Athens apartment. Handetia (Theodora Efstathopoulou, Nikoleta Laskidou) highlights the sound and memory of bells in Drama.

INITIATIONS: INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FILMS
The Meeting Point, the Olive Tree (Nimal Bourloud, Lienke Roos, Hannah Hertzberg) follows Athens’ oldest olive tree as a living monument of human-environment relations. Mr Boki’s Ghost (Esther Carlin) blends fiction and reality to explore silence and loss. The Beast’s Path (Pedro Valtierra Anza) traces migrants’ journeys aboard freight trains. What Did You See Today, Bird? (Tiziano Locci, Anna R. Japaridze) reveals the vibrancy of the linguistic and musical traditions of Italy’s Arbereshe community. Daily life and collective action also emerge in Don’t Park Here on Saturdays (Myrto Greve, Sarah Krause) and Owen’s Defence (Hannah Knox, Emma Tsoneva), while The Crack (Laura Cadena, Dephne Kuzucu, Antonios Somarakis) exposes shared economies of exclusion at the margins of Athens. Finally, films such as All One Forest (Giovanni Astorino, Panos Achniotis), The Sound of Wood (Margherita Vita, Emelie Victoria Isaksen), Apoléon (Amir Youssef), Komodo (Elettra Gotti), and Common Language (Harra Garramone, Eszter Kalman, Anna Lehmann) highlight the diversity of ethnographic practice—from relationships with nature and history to collective resistance and social structures.

Through all these encounters, Ethnofest continues to build bridges between cinema and ethnography, artistic inspiration and social research—celebrating the many ways we make sense of and narrate the world around us.

With great joy and anticipation, this year’s edition inaugurates an important collaboration with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, introducing the Athens audience to remarkable works by Greek filmmakers who illuminate the Greek landscape and its people with sensitivity and poetic vision.

This is a unique cinematic journey through the Greek countryside, presented through rare documentaries by iconic directors. The tribute “Geography of the Gaze: The Unplanned Greece (1950–2000)” was born from the rediscovery of Kastoria by Takis Kanellopoulos and was first presented at the 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.

Following its great success there, it now continues its journey in Athens, finding its ideal home at Ethnofest – The Athens Ethnographic Film Festival. With its focus on socially oriented documentaries and films that adopt an ethnographic approach, the festival will host and contextualize the tribute within its Intangible Cultural Heritage section.

Many of these films have been rarely screened on the big screen and are invaluable records not only of Greek film history but also of Greece’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Ethnofest – Athens Ethnographic Film Festival returns for its 16th edition, taking place from 25 November to 7 December 2025, presenting documentaries from every corner of the world. Screenings will be held at Astor Cinema (25–30 November), the Greek Film Archive (1 December), and online via the festival’s platform (1–7 December).

At its core, Ethnofest remains devoted to the human experience in all times and places. Staying true to its vision, the festival approaches cinema as a space of empathy and dialogue — a lens that becomes a tool for understanding both the self and the other. This year’s edition finds our world once again amid consecutive crises, with the genocide in Palestine ongoing, in an era of turbulence, fear, and polarization. Within this complex and often alienating landscape, Ethnofest reaffirms the need for observation and reconnection, continually turning its gaze inward to rediscover, within the familiar and the everyday, the traces that shape human experience and illuminate the many facets of collective coexistence and creation.

Renewed with a Greek Competition Section

For the first time, Ethnofest introduces a new competition section, “Initiations: Student Films in Greece.” The section aims to actively support and promote emerging voices and local productions. Student films created within academic programs in film and social sciences will compete for a €500 award.
The Jury includes Panos Gkenas, Fili Olsewski, and Mel Kalfanti.

Opening Film

The 2025 edition opens on 25 November in collaboration with the Greek Section of Amnesty International, with the Greek premiere of Lamia Chraibi’s documentary CIRCO. The screening coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and follows the story of Richard, a young artist from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, who searches for his identity and place in the world through art and community.

CIRCO (2024, Canada/Brazil, 88’) – Directed by Lamia Chraibi
In Rio de Janeiro, Richard dreams of dazzling audiences in the world’s greatest circuses. But when his adoptive mother expels him from home, his life is turned upside down. His once-clear dream begins to fade as he embarks on a long journey of self-discovery. A vibrant community of drag queens becomes his refuge, opening a new path as he transitions in Asilah. Amid uncertainty, the spirits of Candomblé offer him hope, while his sister remains a steady pillar of support. With an intimate, observational approach, Circo immerses us in the lives of Brazil’s favela residents as they struggle to shape their own futures.
