The Town They Couldn’t Give Away

Even after 40 years, the Turkish Cypriot refugees struggle to feel at home in Morphou. Didem, born after ethnic partition, wants the town returned to its former Greek Cypriot inhabitants as a peace offering. Others, like the nationalist mayor- with his penchant for flags and modernization projects- vow to keep it forever.

Simon Bahceli

Simon Bahceli was born in 1966 in the UK to Turkish Cypriot/English parents and grew up in London. He moved to Cyprus and spent several years teaching English to university students until taking up journalism in 2002, when he wrote for Reuters and local Cypriot newspapers on both sides of the ethnically divided island. Recently his interest has shifted to documentary making.
